AutoCAD DRAWING
MA 101 Syllabus Summer
PREREQUISITES: None
INSTRUCTOR: Ms. D. Botsko, M. Ed. e-mail
TEXT/WORKBOOK: By Wohlers and Manning, Applying AutoCAD, 5/e, Glencoe Publishing, 2005.
COURSE CONTENT: This course is designed to prepare the student to think and communicate by using the medium of computer graphics. The specific intention is to stress the understanding of useful visualization tools (commands) as an information and communication tool to efficiently draw an interpretation of a functional design. Therefore, concepts of computer-aided sketching and drawing techniques form an integral part of the basic thrust of the course as it seeks to prepare the student to master the drawing commands and concepts presented.
OBJECTIVES: Each student will be able to use, with facility, basic AutoCAD commands and techniques, properties to convey ideas required for study in many technical graphic fields and for the successful completion of techniques and ideas that are required for study in many engineering fields. Each student will be able to successfully use computer-aided drawing to communicate lettering, line weights, alphabet of lines, measuring (fractions, decimals and metric), projection systems, isometric, oblique, multi-view pictorials, auxiliary views, dimensioning, sectioning, tangents, tolerances, threads, springs, engineering standards, and an introduction to working drawings.
EXAMS/QUIZZES : There will be ONE exam and a final . In addition, there will be a quiz at the beginning of every class consisting of 1 - 10 questions and/or drawing problems from the previous class lecture assignment due that day also at the beginning of class. Homework may be graded in place of or as part of quizzes. Daily problem sheets and quizzes will then be averaged and that score will count as 1/3 rd of the total course grade. No quizzes or exams can be made up for any reason . The grade for a missed quiz is a ZERO.
REQUIRED: A computer floppy/disc must be obtained before the SECOND CLASS MEETING and should be brought to EACH CLASS SESSION. These may be purchased through the Saint Vincent College Bookstore or any supplier.
CLASS ATTENDANCE: Irregular or casual attendance results in fragmented understanding and poor performance. Please make every effort to keep up with assignments and to attend all classes, to be on time for each session, to be prepared and to stay for the entire period. Generally one occasional unexcused absence will not hurt your grade. You are responsible for all work and all announcements, go to BlackBoard for homework made during each class. Since you are not permitted to make up any quizzes , it is vital that you be present for each and every class.
LATE WORK: MAJOR PROJECTS ARE ONLY DUE ON THE ANNOUNCED DUE DATES. Daily assigned worksheets are due on the announced dates. No worksheets will be accepted later than one class past its due date. Ten (10%) percent will be deducted from work submitted one class late. If you have a legally acceptable reason for your absence, the written excuse must be submitted along with the late work, & no deduction will be taken.
ACADEMIC HONESTY: All assignments for this course must be done individually - unless otherwise noted by the instructor for the class. If two or more students hand in duplicate work (i.e. exact styles of graphic presentation, calculations being correct and/or in error) zeros will be given to all guilty and/or questionable parties for the particular drawing(s). Repeated incidents will result in academic disciplinary action.
TUTORING FOR THE COURSE: I will be available for tutoring after each class or by appointment. You can leave a message at X2335 or with the faculty secretary (Shirley Skander) in the Second floor Placid office, and I will call you back. Be sure to give your name and number in the message. E-mail is another method to get help (see above).
CANCELLATION OF CLASS: Please check BlackBoard Announcements each day before class.
GRADING POLICY: The grading system will be according to the current SVC catalog.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING DRAWINGS: 10% EACH: Accuracy/Measurements, Lettering (all caps), Adequate Dimensions, Lines/Density/Thickness/Overlapped, Arrowheads/Leaders/Overruns, Clarity/Shape, Connections/Radii/Fillets, Rounds, Spelling & Abbreviations, Dimension Placement, and Title Block/Neatness/Layout.
