Department Philosophy

The study of history offers both a framework for a liberal education and a broad foundation for a variety of careers--teaching and research, law, journalism, foreign service, government, business, and librarianship. It provides a context of historical knowledge essential for an understanding of the contemporary world. By analyzing historical events, students appreciate more fully the complexity of human experience. By examining social changes in other times, they develop a broad perspective and the ability to weigh evidence and argument that free people live with in a rapidly changing world.
