History of the Reserve

The Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve is an educational/environmental center and recreational area created through a collaborative effort between the family and friends of the late Mrs. Arnold (Winnie) Palmer and Saint Vincent College, where she served as a member of the Board of Directors.   The Reserve captures Winnie Palmer’s vision to protect the scenic view of the Saint Vincent College campus from development along the busy Route 30 corridor, and serves as a lasting tribute to a woman who wanted to preserve the landscape she knew and loved.

Established in 2000, the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve is comprised of the initial Reserve area, land adjacent to Saint Vincent College, and land contributed by the Archabbey.  The focal point of the reserve is the relocated and reconstructed 1879 barn that now serves as the Environmental Learning Center for the Reserve.
The barn is carefully situated to enhance the property and was reconstructed using 99% of its original barn materials. It offers large open spaces and smaller meeting rooms, offices, comfortable seating, educational resources, and handicapped-accessible restrooms. Outdoor plantings include butterfly, wildflower, and seasonal gardens, an area to raise crops for research and demonstration, and native meadowland, trees, and plants that will encourage wildlife and wetlands.  Winding trails provide a unique location to reach out to the community through nature, recreation, culture, and history as the WPNR provides a variety of educational programs and activities.

The historic 1780 Lochry Blockhouse was discovered on the site and restored with the help of area community members, including students from Latrobe and Derry Area schools.
