Environmental Education Programs at 
The Monastery Run Project Site
    

Wetland Wonders, Grades pre K-2 (1.5 hours) -  Discover the wetland ecosystem and all its wonders.  What is a wetland and what plants and animals live there?  This primary program focuses on how we use our senses to experience nature. 

Cost:  $5.00/student
Maximum: 25 students
Minimum: 15 students

Wild and Wonderful Wetland Experience, Grades 3-6 (2 Hours) - Hands on activities in the wetland allow students to investigate the mysterious orange water, dissect a weird wetland plant, inspect creepy crawlers, and at the end they “Iron It Out”. 
PA State Academic Standards Addressed:  
E&E - 4.1.4C,D,E and 4.3.4B
S&T - 3.1.4D,E; 3.2.4B; 3.3.4A,B,C; 3.4.4A; 3.6.4A,C and 3.3.4B,C

Critters and Chemistry: Investigation of the Wetlands at Monastery Run, Grades 7-9 (2 Hours) Chemical and biological parameters are investigated at the beginning and end of the wetland system.  Students collect macroinvertebrates, analyze mine water, and chart data.  Field kits and sampling equipment are used to determine what is happening chemically and biologically in the wetland cells as the mine water travels through five wetland ponds during the treatment process.

Scout-It-Out Wetland Adventure (2 Hours)  - Scouts examine the wonders of wetlands to receive a participation badge.  Scouts employ various techniques to observe nature and sample mine drainage.  By looking at insect diversity, plant adaptation, and completing chemical analysis of the mine water in the wetland, and collecting stream organisms, Scouts can determine the effects of the wetlands on stream health.

Monastery Run Tree Discovery Trail Program (2 Hours) – Webelos scouts forage into the woods and wetlands to earn their Forester Badge.  Scouts become part of a tree and act out their function, determine how old their “tree” is, identify types of forests, and discuss wildfires and how to prevent them.  In the field, they identify trees and forest plants and explain their uses.

Micro to Macro Worlds in the Environment (2 Hours) - Students investigate the living worlds found around the wetland project area.  Students will work in investigative teams to complete the Mystery Activity identified.  Each team will collect, identify, and examine the items found from a lake, pond, wetland, and field site to understand the Micro to Macro World.

World of Wetlands (2 Hours) -
S
tudents explore the wonders of wetlands and their function in the environment.  Students examine the water, soil, animals, and plants found at the Monastery Run Project Wetlands to gain the knowledge of this ecosystem's functional role in the environment.

Wetland Flora Fun (2 Hours) - Wetland plants make special adaptations to the wet and harsh conditions of the ecosystem in which they live.  Learning to use a dichotomous key, scavenger hunt, and hands-on activities, students identify these marsh residents, their adaptations, special features, and role in the environment

Scheduling Information

Programs Offered: 
April-October  

Program Costs:  

All On-site Programs are $5.00/student for 1.5-2 hour programs.  
Fees will be charged for the number registered regardless of sickness or absentees.

There is no cost for adults or chaperons.  

Restroom and Lunch Facilities:
Your class may bring a brown bag lunch and picnic at the wetlands-please bring blankets. 

R
estroom facilities are available at the Saint Vincent Gristmill - home of the Watershed Education Classroom - where your student’s wetland experience will begin.  

Parking:  
Buses may drop students off at the Saint Vincent Gristmill and Park at designated Bus Parking.


Registration:

You may register for programs by contacting the Center at 724-537-5284 Tuesday through Friday 10:00 am-4:00 p.m.  Times fill up quickly during September/October and April/May, so please schedule early.
