CAREER OPTIONS FOR MUSIC STUDENTS

Saint Vincent College offers three degrees in music:

Bachelor of Arts in Music
Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance

Depending on the music graduate's interests, abilities, and ambitions, there is a variety of career options available. Competition for music positions is intense.

INDIVIDUAL POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION
Many students choose to continue their education at the graduate level. Graduate schools offer advanced work in music performance, music therapy, music history and theory, and other specialized courses of study.

PERFORMANCE
Paid performance opportunities exist with major choral societies, local symphony and chamber orchestras, opera companies, and musical theatre ensembles. Staff piano accompanists are used for rehearsals by choral, theatre, and dance companies.

SACRED MUSIC
Church organists and choir directors serve in parishes of all sizes and denominations. Larger congregations with a strong music emphasis may have a music director who oversees all musical activities of the parish and may engage paid core choir members as well. Church musician positions may be either full- or part-time, depending on the size of the congregation and its emphasis on music in worship.

MUSIC MANAGEMENT
Music graduates may work in the business area of music as staff members of a performing organization, touring ensemble, college or university music department, music retailer, or artist management firm. Music technology and recording is a highly specialized area of music management. A business background is helpful in entering the music management field.
