Fine Arts Department

Introduction

The Fine Arts at Saint Vincent College are firmly embedded in the framework of a liberal arts curriculum that broadens the educational experience of the students while pursuing study in a major field.   The Department offers five majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and six minors that enhance other degree programs. All major and minor requirements are taken in conjunction with the College core curriculum.

In addition, the Department offers a number of courses integrated with two other College programs: the Common Texts and the Interdisciplinary Writing Program.   In this way, students gain an intense and rigorous study of the discipline as well as a broad course of study in the liberal arts. (For more information on the core curriculum, contact the Admissions Office.) Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the rich number of cultural events in the Pittsburgh area.   This includes internships at area museums, restoration projects, and field trips to performances, museums and historic homes. Opportunities to study abroad are also provided, both through the College Study Abroad Program and through shorter (usually two week) summer excursions sponsored by individual departments.

Artist in Residence Program

Music and the Arts on Campus

Music. The Saint Vincent Concert Series provides eight world-class artists on stage each season. The historically costumed Saint Vincent Camerata performs music of the Medieval, Renaissance  and Baroque periods against the dramatic backdrop of the Saint Vincent Basilica.      Student musicians perform with the Saint Vincent Singers, the Troubadours, the Campus Ministry     Choir and the Pep Band.  Music majors also perform in recital.

Art and Art History.  The Saint Vincent Art Gallery houses a permanent collection that includes many significant artists; it also hosts visiting exhibitions regularly.  The Gallery provides a unique opportunity for both Studio and Art History students to study art directly.  Art students exhibit their work in the gallery each Spring.

Theatre.  The campus is home to Saint Vincent Theatre, a professional Equity Theatre that offers five productions during summer, spring and fall. Saint Vincent Children's Theatre offers live drama for grade school children. Professional entertainers and artists as well as students find an outlet for their talent.
